Brewery History
Hyland’s Brewery was formed in 1996 by the Damon family in Sturbridge, Massachusetts at the orchard and farm that the family has owned since 1945. While Chris damon worked to revitalize the orchard, brother Don Damon transformed the former apple storage barn into a state-of-the-art brewing operation. Under the direction of head brewer Bill Peterson, Hyland began brewing Sturbridge Amber Ale and soon introduced Sturbridge American Pale Ale and Hyland’s Sturbridge Stout.
Over the years Hyland’s has developed a strong base of loyal fans, brewing excellent year-round products as well as specialty and seasonal offerings.
Early in 2004, after many years of hard work and dedication, Chris Damon decided it was time to focus his attention on other areas of the orchard and farm operations. Instead of closing the brewery, an arrangement was made with Hyland’s brewer Todd Sullivan and Todd’s long time friend Tim Daley, also an experienced brewer, to assume responsibilities for the brewing operation. In May of 2004, Todd and Tim formed the Pioneer Brewing Company in order to continue the Hyland’s tradition of quality beer.
Todd Sullivan and Tim Daley are both graduates of the Siebel Institute of Technology, the nation’s premier facility for advancing brewing technology. They bring a combined 20 years of professional brewing experience to Hyland’s, and look forward to brewing many fine Hyland’s products as well as some new and interesting concoctions under the Pioneer label.
